Selfish Christianity exposed

Selfish Christianity exposed

Most people who claim to be Christians recognise Christ as Saviour, but few recognise His authority as Lord of their lives. I admit that I have been living this way for many years (and am still work in progress). Did you notice that many Christians today are seeking primarily God's personal blessing for themselves, rather than discovering His purpose and allowing their lives to fit in to that purpose? What about you? .

  • The Internet; The Mirror

If I have kids; one day they will probably say to me "Hey dad; what was it like growing up as the internet was invented?" and I don't know what I'll say to them exactly. I'm sure, at the very least, I'll be able to recount an exciting time of technological advancement.

  • Hope or discontent: aging in context of belief

Whether atheist, agnostic or religious, the question of what happens around and after death is a vital one. After attending a talk by prominent Christian and scientist Professor John Lennox at a local church in Oxford, some important issues were raised in my mind. One in particular was of special interest to me, the ultimate death of joy.

  • Children's Books Change Society: Where are we heading?

In the 50's pipe smoking in children's books did not raise an eyelid (Cowboy Andy, 1959). This changed abruptly when it was found tobacco was really quite nasty to human health. Why? Because it was realised that children's books carry messages that influence the way kids, and thereafter adults, view the world.

  • Seven billion reasons to think ahead

According to the United Nations, the human population on this planet reached, and quickly grew past, seven billion on October 31st this year. Apart from the sheer number of people trying to survive on the planet in November 2011, one of the most concerning statistics coming out of the UN projections is the rate of increase of population growth when compared with historical figures.

  • Man of the Match or a fluke?

I always enjoyed at high-school the 'inter school sport'. The chance to leave the school grounds for an afternoon and challenge another school in various sports was a nice difference to the routine of school life. The rivalries amongst other local schools were always great banter and students enjoyed themselves.

  • A simple shoe box

Imagine a Christmas with no gifts. Imagine a Christmas where you never see the joy on your children's faces opening specially wrapped presents. Imagine, as a parent, not being able to afford to go to the shops each year in December and choose something for your children, your nieces, nephews or grandchildren.

  • This is better than photos

Allow me to share the best thing I've ever done to capture the essence of my children as they grow up. It started as a cute keepsake but it's grown into a precious treasure that I would scramble to rescue if my house was on fire. I'm not talking about photos (although I love my photos), I'm talking about writing down the memorable things my children say as they grow up. It's hilarious, confronting and revealing…and I recommend doing it!

  • Will you catch me if I jump?

As a qualified swimming teacher and coach for over 17 years, I have seen many different responses from babies 3 months old to seniors 90 years of age when in the water.

  • Where have all the Bibles gone?

Have you ever heard of a bible study without the bible? Well this question is not as ludicrous as it may sound. You see, for numerous bible study groups today, the bible is rarely being used. Bibles don't even seem to be welcome as slightly heavy accessories, with many Christians checking their bibles at the door for more contemporary Christian resources.

  • Sick of church children's talks that are lame?

Have you ever been sitting in church, listening to a children's talk, and cringed? Have you ever been the one giving the talk, and watching others (and feeling yourself) cringe? Are you sick of church children's talks that are lame?

  • Possible relationship between creation and music?

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
