God is not a genie

God is not a genie

As a child, I always loved listening to fairytales. Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty or Snow White and the Seven Dwarves are some of the wonderful fairytales I looked forward to listening at bedtime. I thoroughly enjoyed the African folktales my dad would recount as my family gathered around a weekend afternoon in our backyard garden. I would sit attentively and listened with great anticipation as such stories where told. .

God never commanded us to be the Proverbs 31 woman

  • The greatest mystery of Christianity

Once I was talking to a devout Muslim at a mosque. He exclaimed "How can Jesus be the son of God? You Christians are saying that Allah had a wife?" He had rightly reasoned because of his genuine reverence for God. How would you respond? How can Jesus be both divine and human? How can God be both three and one? These are perhaps some of the toughest questions for the Christian faith.

  • The ten greatest preachers of the twentieth century part 3

As an occasional web surfer I came across a list of great preachers of the twentieth century which sounded interesting as I have the distinction, like millions upon millions of others around the world, as a listener of sermons.

  • Christmas reflections; grief, Santa's sleigh and going to Bethlehem

My reflection. After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews?"

  • Peace on earth

The stifling heat had escalated throughout the day and the humidity had given our skin a constant bathing. Tired, we all slept well that night until, early in the morning, we were awoken by an enormous crack of thunder that carried the power to shake the house, rattling the light fittings and shaking the display cabinet which was laden with china cups.

  • Desires, disguises & distance relationships

I've always found the phrase 'hopeless romantic' to be an intriguing combination of words. In contemporary English, this label is given to someone who is in love with the idea of love, and often experiences a fairy-tale infatuation with every eligible person they meet. At a more literal level, however, a hopeless romantic would be someone who was just that - useless at the art of romance.

  • Ctrl-Alt-Del: Rebooting life

In 1981, a guy called David Bradley was part of a team building IBM's new personal computer. Back in the days, programmers had to manually restart the entire system whenever the computer encountered a coding glitch.

  • Mandela

Where were you when news of Nelson Mandela broke? Were you devastated at the loss of a man whose battle with a deeply racist nation would change thousands of peoples' lives - or were you indifferent towards his courageous actions?

  • The spirit of giving

I remember being in Grade 5 at school around the end of the year when a teacher played a song to us. This song was one I couldn't remember hearing before. My teacher gave us the lyrics of the song printed out on some paper.

  • T'was a couple of weeks before Christmas

I had a more 'intellectual' topic prepared but I couldn't help but get caught up in the festive season, as I do every year. I think I must store it up for this time because I get uncharacteristically sentimental and soft, tearing up at carols and that kind of nonsense.
