Agent Peggy Carter inspires me with her sassiness, her beauty, her strong-willed personality, and her determination to get the job done. Being a superhero lover, I tend to follow along with TV adaptions of films. When one of my favourite TV shows, Agent Carter, finally aired I was so excited.
When I watched the very first episode, it opened with a shot of Agent Carter walking down one of New York City's crowded streets. I noticed how she was walking towards a crowd of black and white suits; dressed in a bright blue skirt and jacket, she wore a bright red hat, and red lipstick.
As she walked confidently through the crowd, I realised, no matter how beautiful, bright and confident she was, no one paid any attention to her. She was invisible to the outside world, yet she still held her head up high and kept walking. Even if the world turned their heads from her, she would still walk with confidence and live life no differently to if they were looking right at her. But it was then that I realised, invisible or not, it all depends on where you walk.
First day jitters
Walking to uni on my very first day was daunting; I felt invisible walking towards a crowd of students, each preoccupied with their own concerns for the day. Although I did feel alone, I felt comforted by the thought that everyone was in the same boat. We were all focused on finding our lecture rooms, our way around the university, and getting all our books sorted for our first classes.
University is a big place for a first year student, and it is easy to feel invisible. As I gripped my bag and carried on down the path, I was so nervous and felt like I was going to make a mistake with every step I took.
When we feel like we are invisible, we are always visible to God. Hagar was in the wilderness when she was refreshed by God as He revealed His care for her (see Genesis chapter 16, verse 13). Just like Hagar, God also knows your deepest thoughts, your greatest pain, and your biggest dreams. She called the well 'Beer Lahai Roi' which means 'well of the living one who sees me,' because she knew she was never alone.
He will not forget you
God is with us wherever we go. Whatever mess we are in, whatever is going on in our lives, he meets us right where we are. He dreamed us up, he created us and we came from him so we are part of him. He cannot ever forget us.
On my first day of uni, as I said a silent prayer to God, I felt my confidence growing. As I took my next steps I wasn't nervous anymore, I wasn't afraid of being alone and I knew God was walking this path with me.
When we stare down a road of emptiness, it is our God who gives us wings to fly the extra miles. When we wake up in the morning, we can choose whether to feel alone and invisible, or to be a bright light in other people's lives.
'So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.' – Isaiah 41, verse 10.
'See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me.' – Isaiah 49, verse 16.
