On the heels of hitting the $400 million milestone, Universal and Illumination have set the release date for The Secret Life of Pets 2. The studio will release its sequel on July 13, 2018.
The project will be produced by Meledandri and his longtime collaborator Janet Healy.
The movie, directed by Chris Renaud and Yarrow Cheney, revolves around the life of pets while their keepers are at work. Despite its huge success, the film has been criticized for its lazy story telling as the film brags incredibly formulaic easy and narrative jokes, and a plot that bears much resemblance to Toy Story.
The voice cast for The Secret Life of Pets includes Jenny Slate, Louis C.K., and Eric Stonestreet.
Renaud will return to direct The Secret Life of Pets 2. We will also see Brian Lynch returning for screenwriting.
In the U.S., the movie debuted in early July as the best opening for an original animated film, with a $104.4 million start, going on the hold the top spot for two consecutive weekends.
Illumination studio is also currently working on a few upcoming projects, which includes music competition centric 'Sing' opening this December, as well as 'Despicable Me 3' and two more adaptions 'The Cat in The Hat' and 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas'.
