Apple sold its billionth iPhone last week, half of which were sold within the past two years, the tech giant announced on Wednesday. Despite falling iPhone sales for two straight quarters, but the company is still posting big numbers overall.
Apple CEO Tim Cook first made the announcement at an employee meeting at company's Cupertino campus, revealing that the company surpassed its 1 billion milestone last week.
iPhones have been dubbed king in the smartphones arena, and clearing this milestone is pretty impressive for the company.
Cook said in the employee meeting that the iPhone has become "one of the most important, world-changing and successful products in history."
"It's become more than a constant companion. iPhone is truly an essential part of our daily life and enables much of what we do throughout the day," he added.
Apple is currently competing with other Android smartphones manufacturers. Previously, Google reported that Android is being used by 1.3 billion users every month.
It took seven years for Apple to hit its 500 million iPhone sales which was marked in March 2014.
Reports have also suggested that Apple might not release its iPhone 7 this year, but instead will wait its 10 year mile stone next year.
