Compassion International has launched the 'You Can' campaign with the aim of sending a simple message that people can release a child from the grip of poverty one at a time.
The campaign starting earlier this month is trying to help people understand poverty and do something about it. Tim Glenn, Compassion International's U.S. Advocacy Director, said that when people looked at global poverty they feel overwhelmed by it; however through this campaign, the Christian ministry hopes to empower individuals to do something about it by reminding them that one child can be snatch from poverty one at a time.
"We realize that many people look at the issue of global poverty and become overwhelmed, but Compassion's message has always been that the most strategic and effective way to attack poverty is by releasing one child from its grip at a time," said Mr Glenn.
"The 'You Can' campaign is a reminder of that message. And it is our hope that these resources will empower people to get involved in the fight against child poverty."
Mr Glenn continued saying that the 'You Can' website, part of the campaign, is about empowering viewers to not only understand poverty but to physically respond to it by do something such as sponsoring a child or praying for them.
"Everyone of your listeners can get involved right now in the fight against poverty, whether its sponsoring a child or praying for those who are struggling in poverty or getting involved in a campaign for your church, or whatever. That's the goal of the 'You Can' campaign."
He prays that people can visit the website and share it with their loved ones so that a movement of people can start massing to fight against global poverty.
"My prayer is that people will go to this Web site, that they will use these resources to learn more about poverty and how they can get involved in the fight against poverty. Then they can share those resources with their friends, with their family, with their church so we can start a movement of people getting involved in the fight against global poverty."
Compassion International is one of the world's largest Christian child-development organizations working with 800,000 children in 24 developing countries with indigenous churches in Africa, Asia, Central & South America and the Caribbean.
