The Catholic Bishop Conference India (CBCI) in a statement released on its website was asking the president to deal with the matter that had caused 'wanton destruction of houses, desecration of Churches and educational institutions' during the Christmas period.
The violence that occurred in Orissa had not only shaken the faith of Christians living there, noted CBCI, but also inflicted 'unprecedented' misery on its people.
John Dayal, the general-secretary of the All India Christian Council, told the International Christian Concern that Christians, young and old, were fleeing the villages while the remnants were suffering.
"Young and healthy Christians have left their villages to flee for their lives. Children, women, [the] old and sick, who could not flee for their lives, are in great danger," Mr. Dayal said.
"Remnants are starving for the last four days, and sick are suffering without medical attention."
On January this year, almost 10,000 people staged a protest rally against the Christian attacks and demanded the Orissa State government to allow Christian relief organisations to provide direct relief to the victims. Currently, Christian aid organisations had to go through the government to distribute emergency relief.
