A study of those using the services of The Exodus Foundation has shown a dramatic rise in homelessness – even among entire families. Demand for food parcels has also soared and there has been a surge in the number of people eating in the Foundation's free restaurant.
Demands and needs"We've recorded an increase of 36% in the level of homelessness for individuals and families. In other words, for those already living in cheap accommodation, even that is now not cheap enough", said Rev. Crews, founder of The Exodus Foundation.
There has been a 39% rise in the number of families needing food parcels since 2008. And a 60% increase in the number of people coming for a meal in The Exodus Foundation's Loaves & Fishes Free Restaurant.
The Exodus Foundation provides free shower facilities and demand for this service has risen by 250%. "What we are seeing now is families who have had their electricity disconnected coming to us for a hot shower", said Rev. Crews.
"Our findings show that the issue of homelessness is getting worse, not better", said Rev. Crews. "What's needed is for government to better assist families and individuals who are on the edge of homelessness in order to prevent them becoming homeless."
