Moreover, coaches can become a part of their proteges' lives both on and off the field. They witness their athlete's increasing maturity in skills development and likewise see their personal development and growing maturity through academic achievement, engagements, weddings and even the birth of children.
In many cases the coach and his protege is more than a sporting partnership, in some cases the role also involves that of a life coach and herein lies some of the issues that coach carers have been able to identify.
"Should the coach find him or herself in a situation whereby they too are struggling, they are hardly in the right mind or the best situation to be giving life related advice to their charges," M V Tronson explained.
The basic concept of respite for coaches has been a recent phenomena that Well-Being Australia has developed with its two facilities, 'Basil Sellers Moruya' on the NSW south coast and 'Basil Sellers Tweed' on the north coast of the state.
One of the critical aspects of Well-Being Australia's respite ministry to coaches is to ensure that they and their families are also on the right side of their own human experience relating to family joy, fun and relationship.
"When my wife Delma and I relocated from Moruya to Tweed Heads in December 2005, the first thing we did was to visit the numerous coaching staffs in each of the six Australian Institute of Sport units in south east Queensland," M V Tronson noted.
It became very evident M V Tronson said, the coaches were delighted to have someone caring for them and this naturally flowed to serious discussions and to their taking time-out for personal and family respite.
"It also re-emphasised how important respite is for the carers too, for I too found myself requiring my own time-out to rejuvenate my inner spiritual strength in the Lord, and Ministers are sometimes not very good at this themselves," M V Tronson mused.
To this end M V Tronson has revolutionised his own agendas following the wisdom of Reverend Dr Rowland Croucher who established John Mark Ministries as a ministry to Ministers.
"My wife Delma and I have our own annual check-up with Dr Croucher. It's a bit like an emotional audit, looking at what we've done for ourselves to keep our flame of marriage, family, emotional well-being and spiritual fires alive and well," M V Tronson said.
Most denominations today either encourage or mandate such 'audits' for their Ministers and for many, it's become an important routine for their ongoing service in Christian work.
"This has helped me greatly in keeping my own ministry alert and I believe it has been a great benefit to me in my ministry to coaches," M V Tronson stated.
