Where: Rwanda
What: Spring water pipes, gravity-flow water pipe networks and water tanks for over 5300 children
Cost: A$4552 per child development centre
How thirsty would you have to be to drink this?
Yet, for many children in Rwandan communities, this quality of water is the only option. Nevermind that it probably smells, is polluted with dirt and rubbish and tastes a bit offâ€"most significantly, it could kill you.
And children are still thirsty enough to drink it … because it's the only water they have.
Rwanda
In Rwanda, conditions like malaria, cholera, diarrhoea and intestinal worms are simply a part of life. In fact, if you make it to the age of five without suffering one or more of them, you're doing a pretty good job. And unlike life here in Oz, where we can just skip down to the local doctor or pharmacy for the odd spot of diarrhoea or worms, kids like Nadine (age nine) and Ndikumana (age 11) have fewer options. Even if they do become ill, chances are their families won't be able to afford proper medical care, so a simple stomach bug becomes life-threatening in a matter of days.
Rwandan communities are desperate to slow and perhaps even stop the spread of disease, and we have an opportunity to help. Of the 190 Compassion child development centres operating in Rwanda, only 18 have access to fresh supplies of water. Yep, that's right ... only 18. The other 172 rely on water collected from open wells and rivers often polluted by livestock and human waste.
We need to provide 20 of the most affected child development centres throughout the country with spring water pipes, gravity-flow water pipe networks and water tanks. Overall, the project will provide clean water for over 5300 children, plus their families, Compassion staff, and members of the villages. Though a great need, this project will deliver even greater results.
Please ... contribute now to help meet our goal of providing safe water for Compassion assisted children in Rwanda. While a huge target for one person, together we can meet our goal to save lives.
