The worst floods for decades in the Philippines, the capital Manila and nearby provinces received 41.6 centimetres of rain fallâ€"about 1 month's rainfall in one day. Australia's ABC online news reports that at least 86 people have now been confirmed dead and more than 330,000 others have been displaced.
Bibles have been destroyed by water. Over 70,000 NT have been lost. All Bible League's Project Philip and Church Planter materials (training resources) have been lost.
These evangelism and discipleship resources will be sorely missed as this office sends out about 1,000 Bibles as well as other study resources a day, to churches across the Philippines. Last year, Bible League in the Philippines placed 1,969,701 Scriptures and trained 17,116 local Christians to plant churches or lead evangelism Bible study groups.
Bible League Australia's CEO, Grahame Smith is on the ground, together with three Bible League supporters. The trip planned months ago, aimed to show these men the results of their financial support. Now, instead of just observing, their presence will be a great blessing to the local Filipino Christians.
"We're staying to help Bible League's local staff work through the logistics of recovery. We're here to help and bring comfort," says Grahame.
Bible League's National Director in the Philippines, Linda Moldez is so thankful for the encouragement these Australians have brought.
Urgent prayer is needed for this nation as the process of recovery occurs, now that the waters are receding. Bible League-trained workers; locally trained Christians, will be reaching out providing help, comfort and prayer.
