Miami Heat: basketball team or political activists?

I must start by saying I write this article with a great deal of frustration. Recently a young American unarmed teenager was shot dead. In the state of Florida in 2005 there was a law introduced that allows deadly force for self defence when you are the victim of an attack.

The 28 year old man who is accused of shooting the young American is white and the teenager who died was African American.

The case, due to its high publicity has been reassigned to a higher U.S Court of law, this case may take months before all the details are received and a verdict is reached.

Shootings in the United States happen daily, many receiving little coverage at all, leaving me to ask, what makes this such a special case? Well unfortunately it appears that race is the driving force behind this media blitz.

Is it more of a tragedy when a white man shoots a black man? Than when a black man shoots a white man? Or even a white man, shooting a white man, and a black man, shooting a black man?

What right do the Miami Heat players have intervening in this case and calling for the arrest of a man, when they have neither the training nor the details or even the right to make a decision in this case?

Why has the Miami Heat never intervened before? From a personal perspective I find it troubling and I type in dismay that they choose this event to voice their possible racial frustrations. White, Black, Hispanic, Asian and so on, why is one life greater than another? It's a simple answer, it's not, and all life is equal.

I would love to see the Miami Heat stand up and defend all shooting victims in Florida for the rest of the season, regardless of the skin colour of the victim. Perhaps it's best that you do what your good at and play basketball.
