Manchester Untied lost their first game of the season, loosing 1-0 to Everton at Goodison Park. United played Van Persie after his midweek move to Manchester but couldn't find a way through the Everton defence to start their season on the wrong foot. Neighbours Manchester City started their title defence with an impressive come back at home to newly promoted Southampton in Manchester. City were 2-1 down as Southampton dreamed of a miraculous start in the premier league however were pegged back as City started their campaign with all 3 points.
Other matches saw West Ham win at home to Aston Villa 1-0 while Arsenal and Sunderland played out a scoreless draw in London. Newcastle had an impressive victory over Spurs with a 2-1 win at St James Park while West Brom had the surprise of the round, defeating Liverpool 3-0 at home. Reading and Stoke drew 1-1 and Chelsea eased past Wigan 2-0 away from home.
