Anzac Day clash: A thriller as Collingwood just beats Essendon

Anzac day is full of traditions and remembering sacrifice. Part of this in Victoria has been the traditional Anzac day battle between Collingwood and Essendon. And again, yesterday, these fierce rivals did not disappoint the 86 000 fans at the MCG under cold wet skies. The game was a great display of the sacrifices made by these professional athletes and the value they place on winning this special game. In the end there was just one point that separated Collingwood 11. 14. (80) over Essendon 11. 13. (79).

Swan wins

Another great victory in this team performance was the individual performance of Collingwood midfielder Dane Swan. Swan won the Anzac Medal with 42 disposals, three goals and 13 clearances. His intense work-rate displayed the passion he and his team had for the Anzac clash.

Bombers came home strong

While the Pies lead most of the game it was the Bombers that surged home over the last quarter coming back from three goals down. When they hit the lead with minutes to go the Bombers fans went wild with visions of a great "come from behind" victory. But it was Collingwood that had the calm heads to snap a final goal to win by one point.

Moving Forward

This mighty battle in difficult conditions was the first defeat for the Bombers this season and a much needed victory for the Pies struggling with form. The Pies take on the Western Bulldogs next week while the Bombers will be hoping for an easy win over the Brisbane Lions.
