However, there is another AFL Grand Final event with a Christian theme. Scots Presbyterian Church is hosting the official AFL Grand Final church service Wednesday 26th from 1pm. For 11 years, the service at Scots has been an opportunity for Christians and non-Christians to gather, to have photos with the AFL Premiership Cup, wear their club scarf and, more importantly, reflect on a greater victory than the Grand Final.
This year the guest speaker is Brendon Nottle, chaplain to the Collingwood Football Club and Salvation Army Major. Brendon will share stories about the year at Collingwood along with how his ministry has developed at Collingwood. Brendon has had the opportunity to take players out on the Salvos street vans and as a result seen a different side of the players we see in public. This simple activity has greatly impacted the players and their view on life and eternity.
While the Grand Final brings together the two best teams, Hawthorn and Sydney, it is also an opportunity to remember the greatest battle that was fought and won: Jesus victory over sin and death. Jesus won the "Premiership" and as a result everyone that is on His team gets to share in this greatest of victories (i.e. life in the full).
The Wednesday 26th program starts with a community sausage sizzle on the corner of Collins and Russell Streets in the Melbourne CBD from 11.30am, followed by the AFL Grand Final church service from 1pm. www.scotschurch.com
