New Year Resolutions
As we enter a new year, with many resolutions being made, it's easy to forget who we are. At the moment I see a lot of people wanting to start a new, healthy lifestyle. This type of resolution may not change who we are in a dramatic sense. Sure, physically you may lose weight. Some people may lose a lot of weight, or some may lose a small amount of weight. A healthier approach to life is what some may be seeking instead.
A Change in Personality
The quote lends itself not only to outward changes, but also inward changes. People can be caught up with thinking they have to act a certain way, or have a certain type of personality. Television shows and Hollywood blockbuster movies portray characterisations which we all are buying into. We all are being sucked into the stereotypes of the "dumb blonde" or the "geek", for example.
The temptations to completely change our behaviour is seen everywhere in popular culture today. It is a battle we must face every day with the help of our Lord. "Temptations that come into your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will keep the temptation from becoming so strong that you can't stand up against it. When you are tempted, He will show you a way out so that you will not give in to it" 1 Corinthians 10 verse 13. That isn't to say that life will be easy. Especially in the early days of this year.
Staying True To Ourselves
As we enter 2013, let us make a resolution like no other. We should commit to making this year the year we stay true to ourselves. Let us guard our hearts, as Proverbs teaches us, from the pulls of the world. "Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life" Proverbs 4 verse 23. I'm faced with the question, as are others, "Am I willing to take up this resolution?"
