I knew from the beginning I was going to love this movie. You can see from the title that it's not a high packed adventure, superhero, science-fiction movie (although I enjoy those too) - no, this movie is a beautiful love story and may require a tissue or two.
Becca is a fun-loving Uni student studying psychology. Her past relationships have had an expiry date of six months, and her inability to commit to relationships throws her headlong into study. To help Becca find some inspiration for her upcoming thesis, her professor sets her up helping in a school where his niece works.
During her work in the school, Becca is drawn to a shy little girl named Emily. As she successfully helps to draw Emily out of her shell, Becca realises they have something very painful in common - they both lost their mothers at a similar age.
When Emily invites Becca for a 'play day', Emily's dad Nate, is surprised to find that Emily's new best friend is a grown up. At first a little concerned, he notices the change that has come over Emily through knowing this grad student who seems to have taught Emily to be happy again.
In getting to know her through Emily's play dates, Nate begins to fall in love with Becca and a romance begins to blossom. As Emily learns from Becca how to deal with her emotions, Becca learns how to love again.
Conflict arises when Nate discovers the topic for Becca's thesis is a little too close to home but when the truth is revealed, we see the picture come together as it should, and are left with a beautiful 'feel-good' story that captures the love of a father for his daughter, daughters for their mothers, and a chance for new love where it may not have seemed possible.
Love Under the Stars sensitively brings attention to the challenges and emotions that children, as well as adults, experience when losing someone close to them as Becca psychologically deals with unresolved pain from her past.
I gave this movie a rating of 7/10. The digital release of Love Under the Stars is available on iTunes:
