This weekend, Mockingjay earns first place in the box office with $21.6 million, ahead of Penguins of Madagascar with $11.1. Mockingjay, now on its third week, has grossed $560.5 million globally.
With two previous movies from the Hunger Games trilogy being successful in the box office, it is no wonder that Mockingjay continues to dominate the box office.
According to Entertainment Weekly, one of the factors that helped Mockingjay to retain its place in the box office is that it came out without any real competition; movies like Horrible Bosses 2 and Penguins of Madagascar hardly possess the same appeal as Mockingjay. Of course, the pull of a good cast, like Jennifer Lawrence, Woody Harrelson, and Julianne Moore, is a major attraction for the movie.
Third place in the box office this weekend goes to Horrible Bosses 2, followed by Big Hero and Interstellar in fourth and fifth places, respectively.
