The film, starring Australia's own Russell Crowe, drew an opening figure 20 percent higher than the George Clooney and Sandra Bullock blockbuster 'Gravity', according to The Hollywood reporter.
Although being based on the widely known Old Testament story, the Hollywood epic has drawn much concern from religious groups regarding its Biblical accuracy, prompting Paramount to add a disclaimer to its marketing materials, stating that, "While artistic license has been taken, we believe this story is true to the essence, values, and integrity of a story that is a cornerstone of faith for millions of people worldwide".
Jennifer Connelly, who portrays Naameh (Noah's wife), also weighed in on the debate, saying in a interview on Good Morning America that "While [Noah] is very creative, very bold and very complex, it really is true to the spirit of the story in the Bible."
"I think what you'll find is that the controversy was generated by people who were speculating or hadn't seen the film yet, for the most part, and we're now getting feedback from religious leaders who have seen the film and are embracing and supporting it."
The film has since hit number in U.S. box offices with its $44million debut. It's success is the latest among other faith-centric films 'Son of God' and 'God's Not Dead' to win over audiences in the States this year.
