One certainty for finals footy is the traditional AFL Grand Final Football Service Wednesday 28th , 1pm at Scots Presbyterian in the Melbourne CBD. The service kicked off back in September 2002 and has been a regular AFL finals event.
In Melbourne this time of year Australian Rules Football is a passion. Robert Lowe, Elder at Scots explains, "Bearing this attitude in mind our thoughts turned to how we as a city church could bring the two together, that is our Christian faith and the passion of supporters for their AFL team. From a humble beginning we believe we have achieved our objective and have now made it part of the calender of events in Grand Final week."
Past Speakers:
Since its inception AFL club chaplains have spoken with their messages having a sporting theme combined with a strong message about Jesus. Our first guest preacher was Bill Vassiliou, Chaplain of the Hawthorn Football Club (three times). Others have been, John Van Groningen Chaplain of the Western Bulldogs, and Rev Allan Dunn Chaplain of the Essendon Football Club. Special preachers have also included Shaun Hart, Brisbane Lions Premiership player and the Rev John Boyers, Chaplain to Manchester United Football Club.
This year's guest preacher is Major Brendan Nottle, Chaplain to the Collingwood Football Club. On the day of the service there is a sausage sizzle in Collins Street from 12noon. The Premiership Cup will be on display and everyone who attends the service is encouraged to wear their team scarf. It is a day when sport and the Christian message come together in the City of Melbourne.
