Five delegates came from South Africa to the Baptist World Congress, and she is the only delegate from her city. Her husband David, who is the Pastor of the Extension 10 Baptist Church, along with their four children who range from 28 to 18 years of age, did not accompany her.
Interviewed by the Australian Missionary News IPTV anchorman Mark Tronson at the Baptist World Congress in Hawaii, Mohuni Matlou says that the Orphan Care Centre is a major component of their Christian community services in Weedbank.
With so many adults missing from the community, this means that the population is weighted with children who have no parents, or one parent, and the Extension 10 Baptist Church is at the forefront of serving the children.
The church has 100 members and a congregation of significantly more (Membership of a Baptist Church is not the same as worshippers attending the congregation, as many attend without becoming 'members'). This coal mining area needs men and women to work in the several coal mines, and many 'outsiders' have come to live and work in the area from all over the country.
The church and the care facility are situated near the settlement camps where many of these workers live. It provides food parcels and pastoral care to many families in addition to the orphaned children.
Mohuni Matlou, as the co-pastor, has responsibility to lead women's and young girls' bible studies, to take fellowship gatherings of women and teenage girls, and generally to teach them Biblical truth, doctrine and living for Jesus Christ.
