In a colourful, confronting journey from the slums of Kenya, the ganglands of Brazil and the illegal quarries of India to the streets of New York and shopping malls in Britain, 58: The Film presents the brutality of extreme poverty and delivers compelling evidence that ending it in our lifetime is possible. It tells the story of everyday people taking action to answer the call of Isaiah 58â€"to end poverty and injustice in our world.
Compassion Australia Chief Executive Officer Tim Hanna says, "58: The Film is a vehicle to motivate us to make a difference in our world and in our lifetime. It tells stories of real people in real situations and, at the same time, gives us the opportunity to bring hope in those situations."
In the past few decades alone, extraordinary advancements have taken place in the lives of millions living in the world's poorest regions. According to the World Health Organisation, fewer children are dying; fewer children are underweight; more women are receiving medical attention during childbirth; and more families have access to clean water.
Compassion Australia's Executive Director of Advocacy DJ Konz states, ""We have made some really good progressâ€"12,000 fewer children under age five die each day from preventable causes now than they did in 1990. In one generation, we've cut the number of children dying from preventable diseases almost in half."
However, extreme poverty still exists. Today, just under one billion children in the world are living in poverty. 58: The Film urges audiences to take action and be the generation that ends extreme poverty.
"58: The Film lifts expectations even as it shows harsh realities," says Hanna. "It shows a vision of His Church rising up, to bring extreme poverty to an end. It invites us to see the possibilities and be part of the solution."
